Olympus the Musical: a race to the finish

Sat 26 May, 7.45 for 8.00pm
Good Company present a concert version of this new musical. Lightning hurls an Olympic athlete through time to the first Olympic Games.
This Musical has been especially written for the Olympic year, and will open at Fairfield Halls, Croydon in May. It then moves to the Minack theatre in Cornwall to co-incide with the lighting of the Olympic Torch. It then comes to Caterham
On the eve of the Olympics, a freak bolt of lightning sends a British athlete into a coma, hurling him back through time, to the slopes of Mount Olympus in Greece and the very first Olympic Games. There, he is ordered by Zeus, the King of the ancient Gods, to bring two young lovers together to prevent war between Sparta and Athens. Success in this mission will take him back to the future, but can he win this race against time?
Based on Romeo and Juliet, set in ancient Greece with the rivalry between Sparta and Athens, Olympus was showcased at the Questors Theatre in London in April and then staged, as part of the Royal Shakespeare Company’s Open Stages initiative with its premiere at the Ashcroft Theatre Croydon 9th – 12th May 2012 and at the Minack Theatre in Cornwall 17th – 19th May 2012 to coincide with the arrival of the Olympic Torch at Land’s End

From early times to the present day the image of Royalty has been depicted in various ways – carving, engraving, painting and more recently, photography. This talk concentrates on painted portraits of our monarchs not only seen through the eyes of the artist but also how royalty wants to be seen by us! Illustrated with some unusual and sometimes mysterious portraits with special references to textiles and jewellery.
The speaker is a practicing artist living locally and has been involved in art education and lecturing in Art History for over 40 years. Jean’s talks are well researched and informative engaging her audience with infectious enthusiasm for paintings and textiles, with a little humour thrown in for good measure. This promises to be an enjoyable evening and is one of several Caterham Festival events to celebrate the Queens’ Diamond Jubilee.
