Crafty Coronation Competition with Play Safely @ Queens Park Pavillion
6:07 am

Play Safely will host a ‘Crafty Coronation Competition’ at the Pavilion in Queens Park (and outside weather permitting!) from 10-1 on Saturday 15 June.

The plan is to run a mass ‘making’ competition with junk modelling, drawing and collages etc.  The theme is ‘inventions since the coronation …. and the Queen’  so anything related to the queen (crowns, thrones, castles etc) plus rockets, robots and ‘boys stuff’!

We will also have several ‘craft’ stalls with local people selling their wares – home made jewellery, jams, bibs etc etc.  Please do let me know if you are aware of anybody who would like a stand.  Only £10 per table.

Tea, coffee and cakes – but not hotdogs this year!

The winning piece will be displayed at Caterham Library

Olympus the Musical: a race to the finish @ de Stafford School
7:30 pm – 10:00 pm

Olympus the Musical: a race to the finish

Sat 26 May, 7.45 for 8.00pm

Good Company present a concert version of this new musical. Lightning hurls an Olympic athlete through time to the first Olympic Games.

This Musical has been especially written for the Olympic year, and will open at Fairfield Halls, Croydon in May.  It then moves to the Minack theatre in Cornwall to co-incide with the lighting of the Olympic Torch.  It then comes to Caterham

On the eve of the Olympics, a freak bolt of lightning sends a British athlete into a coma, hurling him back through time, to the slopes of Mount Olympus in Greece and the very first Olympic Games. There, he is ordered by Zeus, the King of the ancient Gods, to bring two young lovers together to prevent war between Sparta and Athens. Success in this mission will take him back to the future, but can he win this race against time?

Based on Romeo and Juliet, set in ancient Greece with the rivalry between Sparta and Athens, Olympus was showcased at the Questors Theatre in London in April and then staged, as part of the Royal Shakespeare Company’s Open Stages initiative with its premiere at the Ashcroft Theatre Croydon 9th – 12th May 2012 and at the Minack Theatre in Cornwall 17th – 19th May 2012 to coincide with the arrival of the Olympic Torch at Land’s End

Talk on Painted Monarchy by Jean Hammond @ Douglas Brunton Centre
7:15 pm – 9:30 pm

From early times to the present day the image of Royalty has been depicted in various ways – carving, engraving, painting and more recently, photography.  This talk concentrates on painted portraits of our monarchs not only seen through the eyes of the artist but also how royalty wants to be seen by us! Illustrated with some unusual and sometimes mysterious portraits with special references to textiles and jewellery.

The speaker is a practicing artist living locally and has been involved in art education and lecturing in Art History for over 40 years. Jean’s talks are well researched and informative engaging her audience with infectious enthusiasm for paintings and textiles, with a little humour thrown in for good measure. This promises to be an enjoyable evening and is one of several Caterham Festival events to celebrate the Queens’ Diamond Jubilee.

Tickets at £5.00 including refreshments available from – Andy Parr 01883 340000 or on the door .

Caterham Street Party @ High Street
1:30 pm – 7:00 pm

This year the Caterham street party will be on SUNDAY 3rd JUNE.  We will start with the big picnic, part of the Queens Diamond Jubilee celebrations.  It will be on Town End Recreation Ground at 12noon.  Bring your picnic and come and sit with your families and friends.  There will be a free bouncy castle, a clown, giant bubbles and other entertainments.

At 1.30, the Street Party will start, wander into the High Street, past the ‘live in the drive stage where local rock and pop bands will perform.  Go through the market stall area, watch the displays or try the giant games.  Have a go at the potters wheel, try and crawl through the pot hole system or watch the choirs and groups on the Vivace Piano shop stage.  There will be a display by Hula Hooper’s and of skipping.  You could have a drink from Blends, a hog Roast from Michael Lord or a pint from the local pubs.  At the Cross Roads there will be the 5th plinth.  Come and sing or play an instrument.  Tell a joke or recite a poem.  It’s up to you, it could be your chance for your first public performance.  Further up the High Street there will be Einstein’s Entertainers where you can make slime and do other experiments.  There will be a pimms tent here before the other stage where you can dance to the ‘beat on the street’

We have space for another band or two and are always looking for more buskers.  Contact us if you think you can help.

9:00 pm – 10:45 pm

STOP PRESS!!! I have just been informed that our Beacon is to be lit at 10.26pm, so it will be one of the last Beacons before the Queen lights hers.  This means our fireworks will go off before the Beacon is lit.

Caterham is registered as one of 2012 Beacons that will be lit around Great Britain and the Commonwealth.

Ours will be built as a permanent reminder of the Queens Diamond Jubilee and is sponsored by planinsurance.co.uk

There will be other entertainments on the Common but why not attend the Music for the Jubilee event at St Marys’s Church from 6 – 9pm and then come and join in the celebrations?

The firework display is being generously sponsored by Caterham Hill Parish Council.

On Sunday 10th June there will be one of the major Festival events with the International Food Festival.  Over 40 stalls from around the world will have plenty for you to either try or buy.

The Croydon Road will be closed from Blockbusters to the Square.  A free replacement bus shuttle service will be run by the 3rd Caterham Scouts so that you can connect with places along the valley to the 407 at Wapses Lodge Roundabout.

The event will run from 9am – 5pm and apart from he many international food stalls, there will be plenty of local food producers.  The restaurants along the Croydon Road will also be open and we are trying to persuade some of them to give cookery demonstrations – watch this space for more details.

If you would like to do a demonstration or run a stall please contact us.

“Resistance” film @ Soper Hall
7:00 pm – 10:00 pm

Based on the critically acclaimed novel by Owen Sheers, the film will be introduced by the Producer Richard Holmes and Co Producer David Larsen

D-Day has failed and Britain is under Nazi occupation.  Sarah Lewis (Andrea Riseborough) a 26 year old farmers wife awakes to find that her husband has disappeared along with all the men in the valley.  Assuming they have joined the resistance, the women of this tiny community pull together taking on the running of the farms and wait, desperate for news.  A German patrol arrives in the valley, the purpose of its mission a mystery.  When a severe winter forces the two groups into co-operation, Sarah begins an acquaintance with the patrols commanding officer, Albrecht (Tom Wlaschiha).  Cut off from the surrounding war, the lines between collaboration, duty, occupation and survival become blurred.

11:00 am – 2:00 pm

As part of The Caterham Festival, Play Safely are hosting a Teddy Bears’ Picnic in Queens Park in Caterham.

We welcome friends of all ages to come along between 11am and 2pm on Saturday 16th June to enjoy the playground and share a picnic with your favourite Teddy. After you’ve enjoyed your picnic we hope our younger visitors will take part in the Obstacle Course while the older children tackle our Treasure Hunt!

Entrance is completely free and there will be a prize for every child taking part.  There will also be refreshments served from the Pavilion.

We hope that you will also have time to visit the playground and see (or play on!) our brand new climbing frame, generously provided by Tandridge District Council, which should be installed around mid May.  Also, come and have a play on our ‘monster logs’ which are situated just outside the playground fence in our wild orchard.  Over the next few months we hope to develop this natural play area and commission some signage which will identify the names and use of trees surrounding the playground.

Any queries, please call Rosie on 01883 341767 or Claire on 01883 342292.
