A WORD FROM OUR CHAIRMAN

Hello and welcome to the Caterham Festival 2023, my last one as Chairman.

At the AGM earlier this year I felt that after 15 years in charge, it was time for someone else to take over – someone with new ideas, younger (I was 52 when we started but 67 now), and with more energy! I’m delighted to say that Martin Turk volunteered, a local man, born and raised here, and someone I have known for quite a few years.

I’m sure that you will support him like you have supported me over the years. I have offered to stay on and organise some of the events, so I am not disappearing completely, but I have started writing down contacts and other information as most of it is still in my head.

Many of your favourite events are back. My personal favourite is the Street Party with the foam party. The popular Food Fest is back, subject to the roadworks in Croydon Road – watch this space. The Archaeological Dig, Barn Dance, Mummers on Tour, Waller Pain and Caterham, 7 Pub Crawl are all back. We also include details here of local events taking place such as the Hillcroft School 150th anniversary

For the first time we are holding a Literary festival with lots of Author talks, poems in pubs and free book stands around the area. We are also holding Caterham’s first Scarecrow festival. I have heard many people coming up with ideas for this. Start thinking. Details will be on this site in due course.

Other ideas still come in and if possible, we as a group, make them happen. First suggestion for 2024 is a Soap box derby (No, not Church Hill or Waller Lane!)

The final event of my chairmanship will be the Festival ball on 29th September at the Surrey National. Tickets will be available on here and I hope as many as possible can come for a fun evening.

Finally, a very big thank you for all those who have helped on the various committees and sub committees since 2008. Far too many to mention here but they came up with some great ideas that we have taken forward. It was a great pleasure to work with you. Thank you for all your help
